UK Chief Medical Officers' guidelines
The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that both men and women drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week, spread over at least 3 days, with several drink-free days each week.
14 units is equivalent to approximately 6 pints of average-strength beer or 10 small glasses of wine.
What is a unit?
One unit equals 10ml (8g) of pure alcohol. Here's roughly how common cocktail measures compare:
Note: cocktail strength varies widely depending on the recipe and pour size. Always check the ABV of the spirits you're using.
Drinking responsibly
- Never drink and drive. Even a small amount of alcohol affects your reactions and judgement.
- Eat before and during drinking — food slows alcohol absorption.
- Stay hydrated — alternate alcoholic drinks with water.
- Know your limits — everyone metabolises alcohol differently. Age, weight, and health all affect tolerance.
- Avoid mixing alcohol with medication unless you have confirmed it is safe with a doctor or pharmacist.
- Look out for your friends. Don't leave anyone in a vulnerable state alone.
- Pregnancy: The NHS recommends avoiding alcohol entirely during pregnancy.
Signs of alcohol dependency
Alcohol dependency can develop gradually. Signs include feeling you need to drink to relax or cope, drinking first thing in the morning, hiding how much you drink, and experiencing withdrawal symptoms (shaking, sweating, anxiety) when you stop. If any of these sound familiar, please speak to your GP or contact one of the organisations below.
